    Calm Like a Bomb
So I haven't posted in a while, especially on the topic of religion. But I was just reading the Wall St. Journal earlier today (have to for class, sorry) and they had a big deal on Ratzinger becoming Pope. Now, trust me, I've tried to understand why they would elect the 'enforcer'.

So far I haven't come up with a single valid point. Okay, I can see that there's some merit in orthodoxy; it keeps things very simple. 'Do this and go to hell' style stuff. Fire & Brimstone. Dogma is all well and good when it applies to the current global society. So I started reading.
It mentioned that he condemns "Marxism, liberalism, atheism, and agnosticism, urging Catholics to always be alert." Now, three of those applying to me, I'm a little drawn aback. Whatever, maybe he's just referring to the state abolished religion in botched communism and liberal stances on abortion. Whatever, I can understand that. It's a stretch, but I can understand it. So apparently he was also involved with Hitler Youth for a couple years before desserting. Okay, so stretching again, maybe he left right before combat or something? Finally, he's bashed and censured so called 'liberal' Catholic religious leaders. So, okay, he seems like a bit of an asshole thus far. At 78, let's hope someone runs up and yells 'boo' really loud, but then we just get the next nazi pope (note: not my punk rock side coming through, he was really a nazi) but whatever.

After all this it's really hard to find reasons to like the guy. I've been personally staked as evil, and someone that all Catholics should "always be alert" for. And I thought the fundies were the only ones praying for my soul. I've been attacked (not to complain, or compare to more serious discrimination) for being an atheist, and, at least more recently, for my political views. However, this isn't really anything new. Granted a liberal pope would be nice who tends to, well, I don't want to say inclusive, but to not post a dead or alive note for people having different points of view. This isn't life threatening though. Sure, it's annoying, it's insulting, and it's absolutely dumb, but whatever. However, what is life threatening was how he condemned priests in SOUTH AFRICA of all places for advocating the use of condoms because of the AIDS epidemic (where approximately 21.5% of people are HIV positive). Let's say you take your five closest friends. Yep, one of them now has HIV. Anyway, in response to the epidemic, people have been advocating condom use, obviously to help control the spread of the disease. Ratzinger then decides that they shouldn't have sex at all.

This is where I can't possibly understand why they chose the 78 year old 'grand inquisitor' to take over as pope. Back-in-my-days aren't going to prevent AIDS from further
ravaging africa. Or America. I'm sure the jews will really appreciate that we have a nazi as our spiritual leader. And, well, the gays, well, they're not going to be ordained any time soon. In fact, they're evil evil people. The only consolation I guess is that the pope really doesn't hold too much power. I mean who really paid attention to John Paul II, aside from the media frenzy when he was on the way out?

    l-i-b-e-r-a-l, portfolio, and general incoherence
Okay so I know it's been forever since I've updated, especially with anything relevant. Honestly it's because I've been incredibly busy doing way too much and driving myself absolutely batshit. It's all been basically various presentations, midterms, a design portfolio, job hunting, etc, etc. So anyway, I now officially have a design portfolio up on portfolio.halodev.com and I've gotten a few positive crits so far, other than the typography not lining up, which I swear it did before I sliced and htmlized everything. Anyway, that being said, any reactions, problems, typos, whatever would be great.
So other than that I'm wondering exactly when liberal became synonymous with "dirty, birkenstock wearing, tree-hugging". See, here's the thing. You'd expect 'hippie' after a phrase like "dirty, birkenstock wearing, tree-hugging." Hippie just kind of flows with that. However, a friend of a friend said that, along with something about have to smell their tofu.

So it came up like "dirty," *nod* "birkenstock wearing," *nod* "tree-hugging" *nod* "liberal" *tumbleweed*

Anyway, I'm not quite sure where exactly I'm going with this, and I'm a little delirious, and should be studying for my db midterm tomorrow.

    absolutely shameless
    Ok, so before I continue.
1.Wired and BBC (among others) have claimed the company as legitimate
2.a friend of a friend has recieved things from the company
3.it's a pain in the ass, but a small one, and I was bored. very very bored.
4.I have junkable email accounts (gsmith@halodev.com will close when I'm done)
5.I really really want to try out osx.
    5a.I know, because I'm a nerd.

Anyway, getting on with it. An apparently legitimate company is doing mac minis like the free ipod things a while ago. However, I was reading up on how about 1/4 of the freeipod sites were actually legitimate, especially when first opening. This opened about 10 days ago and therefore stands a decent chance of paying out.

    So, onto the shameless part.
I'll give out junkable emails and $5 to whoever decides to help me out whenever their referal shows up.
So drop a comment if you feel like getting $5 and my eternal gratitude.
    Please?

    ***UPDATE***
Okay, so, just to let everybody know, I signed up for the efax option, got the referral point in a day, then cancelled a couple hours later. So far the point still stands and it's free. Just to let anybody know.

Wear Your Patriotism On Your Sleeve
    Let the flaming begin.

    first random idea.

    social commentary, see below entry

United States federal deficit/surplus. Note that reaganomics doesn't work.

One more that even I'm not controversial enough to put up. Ask if you want to see it.

    --EDIT 11/5/04--

So, with people asking about a completely way too controversial, get-your-ass-kicked-by-*liberals*-for-wearing-it shirt idea, I've decided to post it behind a cut. Mainly this is because this could be taken way the wrong way, and probably would be by any number of people. It's honestly not because I don't 'support the troops'. Basically, after hearing people say they support the war even after what it's turned into, I just take it as they think that the cost in human (note: strictly american, we've killed approx. 100 times the amount of Iraqi civilians, as in not enemy combatants) life was completely justified. Basically saying they'd trade 1,100 (so far) American lives for oil, religion, fear, America, 'freedom'. Whichever idea Bush states at any given time. Again, I support the troops, even so much as not wanting them to die for a war we don't want.

Let's hope I don't have to run text on the back too. )

Dear 1984, better late than never.
    Dear 1984,
       Better late than never.

    Sincerely,
    Graham Smith

So the 198...er...2004 elections have come to a close. Sanity seemed to take a vacation somewhere other than orlando, and, well, I didn't compile an 'I told you so' list for the primaries, but let me reiterate.
-Wes Clark would beat Bush, Dean would also beat Bush, any other candidate has little to no shot

    Given that Kerry is nominated:

-Gay Rights will be a big issue, Kerry will not stand concretely opposed to Bush
    +9 fundies +1 liberals
-He won't say Iraq shouldn't have happened in the first place.
    +5 military +5 fear votes +0 liberals
-In general he won't take a controversial stand on anything.
    +10 GOP +fucked liberals

So for 2008, I make the following 'I told you so' list, take notes.

-A terrorist strike on american soil.
    -John Walker Lindh #2, #3, #10.
    -Deficit will hit 700 Billion.
    -Social Security will be abandoned.
-Roe v. Wade will be overturned.
-Evangelical Christians will recieve federal aid at some point. No one will care.
-Gay Marraige will be made illegal in most states.
    -The Draft will be reinstated.
-Civil Liberties will be revokes in the name of freedom.
-Minority enrollment in college will drop (proportionally to ethnicity in America at the point in time)
-Kyoto Protocol will be completely abandoned.
-More jobs will have been lost and outsourced.
-People will be forced to employ themselves in lower paying jobs. The government will state that there has been a huge increase in jobs.

    Going out on a limb...
-One neverending war on multiple fronts. Polls will show people cannot point the battlefield out on a globe.
-Thought Police/Secret Police will be created in response to JW Lindh #2,3,10
-Activism will be officially frowned upon. People will agree.
-PATRIOT Act II will pass. No one will notice.
-Help America Vote Act will be laughed at and dissolved.
-DHS will be exposed for keeping records on environmental/gay rights/liberal activists, but not right wing activists.
-A Revolution will not be televised, lack passion, lack communication, and fail.
-People will realize they can be tracked by the government through the PATRIOT Act and other measures. No one will care.

-War is Peace. Freedom is Slavery. Ignorance is Strength. Except we're calling it Demockcracy.

Stay tuned tomorrow for t-shirt ideas.
